The Birmingham South Stars are one of a number of South Stars teams that played in the old CHL. This team was a one-year wonder that played at Civic Center Arena in Birmingham, Alabama during the 1982-83 season. After the WHA's Birmingham Bulls proved that hockey was viable in Alabama, the CHL wanted a franchise and the South Stars were born. The South Stars won 41 games and reached the CHL finals in their first season, losing to the Indianapolis Checkers. Despite the success of the Birmingham Bulls, the South Stars didn't draw well and supposedly angered the CHL by drawing very poorly during the finals against the Checkers. The CHL itself was doing very poorly financially at the time and would only last one more season before folding. With the relationship between the South Stars and CHL icy, the South Stars left for the ACHL and renamed themselves the Bulls.
This would make a unique gift for the hockey fan in your life or a neat find for yourself of a vintage hockey team from Alabama.
