The Calgary Cowboys joined the WHA for the 1975-76 season after moving from Vancouver. After two poor seasons in British Columbia, they found success in their first year in Alberta, winning 41 games. In the first round of the playoffs they faced off against Quebec and had a wild brawl that cleared both benches and saw 11 players ejected. They would go on to win the series and lose in the second round. Their second season wouldn't go as well, with only 31 wins and missing the playoffs. As fan support dwindled, the team shutdown despite hopes of being merged into the NHL. Calgary would get an NHL franchise, just not the cowboys, a few years later in 1980.
