Cincinnati Swords

The Swords were a brief but hugely popular hockey team in the Queen City. The team was started up for the 1971-72 season as an affiliate for Buffalo, playing at the classic Cincinnati Gardens arena. The Swords made it to the second round of the playoffs in their first season, a sure success. But they one-upped themselves in Year Two. In their second year, they would set a league record for most points and most wins in the season, on their way to a Calder Cup win. The Swords would make the playoffs a third straight year, but after that the WHA planned to expand, bringing the Stingers to Cincy. Afraid of WHA competition, the Swords pro affiliate decided to fold the team. A short but exciting history that is still remembered today.
