Galt Hornets / Cambridge Hornets
The Galt Hornets, originally known as the Galt Terriers, were a prominent senior hockey team in Ontario, with a rich history that left a lasting mark on Canadian senior hockey. Founded in 1960, the team was based in Galt, Ontario, and competed in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) Senior A league. The Terriers changed their name to the Galt Hornets in 1962, reflecting a new era for the team. Later, after Galt's amalgamation with other municipalities into Cambridge in 1973, the team was renamed the Cambridge Hornets, a name under which they would continue until folding in 1987.
The Hornets were a dominant force in the Senior A ranks, achieving considerable success throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. The team quickly established itself as a powerhouse by winning the prestigious Allan Cup in 1961, just a year after their formation as the Galt Terriers. This victory marked the team as one of Canada’s top senior hockey clubs, earning them national recognition.
The Hornets’ success continued into the late 1960s, with another Allan Cup championship in 1969. Their prowess was again on display in 1971, when the Hornets claimed their third Allan Cup in just over a decade.
The Hornets didn't have any all-timers come through their ranks but they did have a number of alumni spend time in the WHA and NHL, including; Jim Roberts - a 2nd round pick of the North Stars in 1976, goalie Dave Dryden who was the older brother of Ken Dryden, and Earl Balfour, who played for the Blackhawks and Maple Leafs.
