Brantford Alexanders
The Brantford Alexanders began as a senior league team in 1976 and the team was named for famous Brantford resident Alexander Graham Bell. They won the 1977 Allan Cup over the Spokane Flyers. That team had a number of players with big league experience on it including Steve Atkinson who played for the Buffalo Sabres. The Alexanders would rebrand as the Welland Steelers in 1978.
In 1978, the Hamilton Fincups left Hamilton for Brantford and took up the Alexanders name as a major junior team. The Alexanders played at the Brantford Civic Centre, aka the "Madhouse on Market Street".
The Fincups had been very successful on the ice - although not attracting enough fans off of it - and won the 1976 Memorial Cup. After the move to Brantford, the Alexanders made the playoffs in five of their six seasons, but weren't able to capture another title. There were a number of notable major junior Alexanders that made the NHL including Shayne Corson, Dave Gagner and Bob Probert among others.
