Adirondack IceHawks / Winston-Salem IceHawks
The Winston-Salem IceHawks started play at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the 1997-98 season. The team played in the United Hockey League (UHL) and originated as the Utica Blizzard in 1994. After not being able to agree on a new lease in Utica, the team headed south for Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem had been home to ECHL and SHL franchises in the early 90s and has a long history of hockey dating back to the 1970s and the Winston-Salem Polar Twins.
The IceHawks would only last a couple of years in Winston-Salem, but they were pretty decent on the ice as they won 64 games over the two seasons. Despite a short stint in North Carolina, the team picked up an awesome IceHawk logo during their time in North Carolina.
In 1999, the team would relocate north again, this time to Glens Falls, New York. In the summer of '99 Glens Falls lost their long-time team, the Adirondack Red Wings. The Red Wings spent 20+ seasons there as an AHL team and the IceHawks franchise jumped at the chance to enter that market. The team would spend five seasons in Glens Falls as the IceHawks, making the playoffs in four of those seasons. They would rebrand to the Adirondack Frostbite in 2004, lasting only another two seasons after that.
A portion of the proceeds of IceHawks apparel goes to support youth hockey in Winston Salem.
