Who were the Danbury Trashers?
The Danbury Trashers are one of the most unique stories in hockey history, as told through the Netflix documentary, Untold: Crime & Penalties. We highly recommend the documentary to hear the full history of the team from the people who were there!
The Trashers played for only two seasons, but left a mark literally and figuratively on the hockey world.
The Trashers started play in 2004 at the Danbury Ice Arena as an expansion franchise in the UHL, which operated at the 'AA' level. James Galante, who owned a large trash hauling business, purchased the expansion rights and named his 17-year old son, AJ, as General Manager. Not afraid to make a splash, AJ signed Brent Gretzky, Wayne's brother, to bring a big name to the box office. AJ also scooped up a number of heavy hitters and gave the a rough and tumble style of play and set a league record with 2,776 penalty minutes. Among the heavy hitters the team featured were Jon Mirasky, Roman Ndur, and Brad Wingfield. The roster construction worked. In their first season, the Trashers won 44 of 80 games and made the playoffs. They would fall in the second round of the playoffs.
The team's second season was even better, winning 48 of 76 games and another playoff appearance. They scored over 300 goals and toned it down a touch, with "only" 2,278 penalty minutes. The team kicked into gear in December, going 11-0-3 for an undefeated month en route to a division title and 107 points. The Trashers also made a memorable run all the way to the league Final, advancing through the first two rounds in exciting fashion via a Game 7 win in the first round and a double OT win in Game 6 in the second round. They would fall to Kalamazoo in the Final. After the season, the elder Galante would be indicted and the team folded.
