New England Stingers
The New England Stingers were a one-year wonder in Roller Hockey International for the 1994 season when the league expanded from 12 to 24 teams overnight. The Stingers played in Portland, Maine, at the then-named Cumberland County Civic Center. The team was owned by the owners of the Portland Pirates who were trying to build on the success of their new Pirates franchise. The team would be coached by future NHL coach Barry Trotz, as Trotz was also the Pirates' coach at the time.
Unfortunately the Stingers were not a big success on the rink as they won only 5 of 22 games. And despite a decent for-RHI average attendance of around 2,500 the team said they still lost $300,000. They would fold during the off-season.
