Eleven defunct California teams, from the World Hockey Association to Roller Hockey International, on shirts, hoodies, hats, and drinkware.

California has three NHL teams now. Before and around them came World Hockey Association clubs in Los Angeles and San Diego, a Western Hockey League team the NHL pushed out of Los Angeles, minor league clubs in San Francisco and Bakersfield, and a whole fleet of professional roller hockey teams. We make apparel for eleven of them, in many cases the only apparel that exists for them anywhere.

We're a family-run small business bringing back the designs and the histories of long-lost hockey teams from California and across the US and Canada.

Hockey Teams in California

Professional hockey has been played in California for most of a century, in more leagues than most fans could name. These are the clubs that came and went along the way.

Los Angeles: Blades and Sharks

The Los Angeles Blades played in the Western Hockey League from 1961 to 1967 and proved the city would support the game. The reward was the NHL's arrival in 1967, which left no room for them. The Blades name came back on a Pacific Hockey League team in 1978โ€“79 and again in the 1990s on a Roller Hockey International team.

The Los Angeles Sharks were a charter member of the World Hockey Association in 1972. They lasted two seasons before moving to Detroit as the Michigan Stags.

San Diego: the Mariners

The WHA reached San Diego in 1974, when the franchise that had been the New Jersey Knights moved west and became the San Diego Mariners. They played three seasons and folded in 1977.

San Francisco: Shamrocks and Spiders

The San Francisco Shamrocks played in the Pacific Hockey League in the late 1970s, a small West Coast circuit that did not outlast the decade.

The San Francisco Spiders played one season in the International Hockey League, 1995โ€“96, at the Cow Palace in Daly City.

Bakersfield: the Fog

The Bakersfield Fog were a founding member of the West Coast Hockey League in 1995โ€“96 and played three seasons at the Bakersfield Convention Center, all of them with Keith Gretzky as coach.

Roller Hockey International

Roller Hockey International launched in 1993, and California was its heartland. The Anaheim Bullfrogs won the league's first championship that summer, and the San Jose Rhinos won it in 1995.

The Oakland Skates, Sacramento River Rats and San Diego Barracudas filled out the state's schedule. The league played its last season in 1999.

California has three NHL teams and a row of minor league clubs now. The eleven teams on this page are gone, and that's the part worth wearing.
