Long before the NHL arrived in the Meadowlands, New Jersey had pro hockey in Newark, on the Atlantic City boardwalk, and in a small, hard-to-love rink in Cherry Hill that somehow hosted both the Eastern League and the World Hockey Association. The original Jersey Devils played here a full eighteen years before the NHL version borrowed the name. Every one of these teams is gone now. This is where they live on.

New Jersey hockey history

Newark and Atlantic City. New Jersey's pro hockey story starts in the 1920s, when the Newark Bulldogs took a turn in the Canadian-American Hockey League, the same circuit that produced the Providence Reds and Boston Tigers. Down the shore, the Atlantic City Sea Gulls played out of the Convention Hall on the boardwalk in the Eastern League of the 1930s and 1940s. The boardwalk got its hockey back sixty years later when the ECHL's Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies moved into the new arena in 2001 and won the Kelly Cup in their second season, then were gone after their fourth.

Cherry Hill. The Cherry Hill Arena in South Jersey is the center of the state's hockey history and one of the strangest buildings in the minor leagues. Its ice was famously uneven, with a slope players said you could feel skating uphill. The Eastern Hockey League's Jersey Devils called it home from 1964 to 1973, and when the NHL came to New Jersey in 1982 the new club took the old name. For part of the 1973–74 season the arena also hosted the World Hockey Association: the New York Golden Blades collapsed in November, moved across the river as the Jersey Knights, played out the year in Cherry Hill, and left for San Diego the following summer.

The Meadowlands era. Roller Hockey International put the New Jersey Rockin Rollers in the Meadowlands in the mid-1990s, sharing the building with the NHL Devils for a few summers before the league contracted. The Jersey Brewers and New Jersey Aces round out the state's catalog of teams that no longer take the ice.
